About the Firm

A law firm built for the age of artificial intelligence

Alumbra Legal exists to help organizations bring AI and third-party technologies into their work responsibly, with legal counsel that genuinely understands the tools in question.

Our story

A decade at the intersection of AI and the law

Alexandra Villarreal O'Rourke is an AI and technology attorney with over a decade of experience, an accomplished AI startup founder, and a Certified AI Governance Professional (AIGP).

Alex has spent her career at the intersection of artificial intelligence and financial services, and she has worked the question of responsible AI adoption from every side. As senior counsel on technology and AI at the CFPB, she advised the Bureau on fintech and AI, work that contributed to the agency's first-ever No-Action Letter, granted to a company using AI in loan underwriting.

In private practice, she was a partner at two large law firms, co-leading their fintech and AI practices. In-house, she was lead attorney for Bank of America's digital bank and General Counsel of Valon, one of the earliest successful enterprise adopters of generative AI among established fintechs.

She is also the founder of Alumbra AI, a technology company focused on building responsible AI tools, including the purpose-built platforms Alumbra Legal leverages, and a scam prevention platform funded in part by JPMorgan Chase.

Alongside her own practice, Alex draws on a network of experienced AI attorneys whose expertise spans a range of industries, so every engagement has the right depth and sector knowledge behind it.

Alex is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Texas, a former Fourth Circuit Judicial Clerk, and permanent member of the federal Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
